A Game Worth Playing

I always say that you get one chance at this game called life and how you care for your body and life today will 100% determine how it treats you tomorrow.

I was reminded of this statement as I was re-reading a business book called The E-Myth by Michael Gerber and in it there is a passage that talks about creating a “game worth playing.”

This “game worth playing” idea is a great example of why Shore Golf Performance & Physical Therapy exists!

To better understand this “game worth playing” concept, read the passage from the book below.

“Most people today are not getting what they want. Not from their jobs, not from their families, not from their religion, not from the government, and, most important, not from themselves.

Something is missing in most of our lives.

Part of what’s missing is purpose. Values. Worthwhile standards against which our lives can be measured. Part of what’s missing is a GAME WORTH PLAYING.

What’s also missing is a sense of relationship.

People suffer in isolation from one another.

In a world without purpose, without meaningful values, what have we to share but our emptiness, the needy fragments of our superficial selves?

As a result, most of us scramble about hungrily seeking distraction, in music, in television, in people, in drugs.

And most of all we seek things.

Things to wear and things to do.

Things to fill the emptiness.

Things to shore up our eroding sense of self.

Things to which we can attach meaning, significance, life.

We’ve fast become a world of things. And most people are being buried in the profusion.

What most people need, then, is a place of community that has purpose, order, and meaning.

A place in which being human is a prerequisite, but acting human is essential.

A place where the generally disorganized thinking that pervades our culture becomes organized and clearly focused on a specific worthwhile result.

A place where discipline and will become prized for what they are…

The backbone of enterprise and action, of being what you are intentionally instead of accidentally.

A place that replaces the home most of us have lost.

That’s what a business can do; it can create a GAME WORTH PLAYING.”

As I was reading this passage, I literally wrote in my book in all caps “PREACH! THIS IS WHY SHORE EXISTS!”

Business is like a game, too.

In order to start a business and, furthermore, to sustain a business, there must be rules in place and a plan of action.

We would refer to these as our systems and processes and our organizational strategy/strategic objective.

The same goes for our lives and how we care for our bodies as well.

That’s why I wanted to share this passage with you.

It’s serves as a reminder to frequently self-reflect and check ourselves to see if the game we are currently playing is to our advantage.

Are we playing someone else’s game?

Are we letting society, the “norm,” or social media determine the game we are playing or where our time goes?

We as humans need purpose, order, and meaning in our lives or else what are we doing?

It’s the difference between truly living and simply existing.

Do you have structure, rules, and consistent habits in your life that help lead you towards achieving a desired outcome or goal?

Are you achieving, or not achieving, the things you want out of life?

If you are, is it because you are being intentional or is it by accident?

These answers will determine whether you have a game worth playing or not.

Your body is no different!

Are you in pain, discomfort, dealing with an injury, planning on having or are recovering from an orthopedic procedure/surgery?

Do you think you will get better without being intentional and developing a “business plan” for your body?

If so, that is the equivalent of a game not worth playing.

Why?

Because you will never reach the desired outcome of the game, your goal. That’s assuming your goal is to feel, move, and play better.
